Web Pages Comments Now Possible with SideWiki

World’s largest search engine provider Google Inc. has launched on Wednesday an added feature to its toolbar, called the SideWiki. The innovative feature would allow online users to input comments on any webpage they are viewed.

According to Google Lab executives, the new SideWiki feature of the website would allow Internet users to comment about anything that they see on the websites.

Comments may range from medical topics, safety online and even social networking issues.

Google Spokesperson Eitan Bencuya, during the launching, encouraged users to contribute their opinions and insights regarding the topics that caught their interest.

Users can also add background information, perspective on new products and technologies, to make the articles more reliable for other online readers.

“Most of the articles shown in many webpages are just one-way communication. With the introduction of the SideWiki in the Google Toolbar, users will never see these webpages the same way again,” Bencuya said.

“Starting today, the web experience of online users will be an open discussion and not just one-way communication,” he added.

Users will only have to download an update for the Google Toolbar to acquire the service, which can also provide further information to other users who have logged their entries to make the SideWiki more reliable since comments are directly connected to the person’s Google profile.

Comments that have been written to the current webpage may also be seen on other webpages that contain the same snippet or articles,” the spokesperson added.

“We can bring this comments on other topics, which we believe has relevance to other issues,” Bencuya said.

Google, in line with this, has also developed a mechanism that would automatically sort the comments depending on its relevance to the topic.

The most useful comments or articles will be put on the top of the list so that online readers can view them easily.

“Instead of sorting the entries chronologically, we have developed a system that would allow users to view the comments depending on their usefulness,” Bencuya said, adding that the unique algorithm will use different signals that will determine if the comment is useful or not.
