We Will Not Close Erotic Services: Craigslist Officials

Online advertising giant Craigslist on Friday said it will not shut down its erotic services following the arrest of Philip Markoff, a second-year med student who contacted his victims through this service.

In an interview with ABC Nightline, Craigslist official Jim Buckmaster and Craig Newmark said they will not close the site’s erotic section despite allegations that this is being used for pimping and prostitutions.

Few days ago, Markoff was arrested for allegedly killing Julissa Brisman, a masseuse who advertised on Craigslist erotic section.  The suspect is also facing multiple lawsuits after several women claimed they were attacked and robbed by the same man accused of killing Brisman.

Inconsistent answers

During the interview, host Martin Bashir asked the two Craigslist’s officials if the ads in the erotic section promote prostitution.  Newmark answered “probably” but then clarified himself and said it “it isn’t that way” before finally saying it is not.

Newmark also said that if there are some advertisements which are criminal in nature, he will “immediately pull out these from the website.”

Bashir then asked the Craigslist founder if closing down the erotic section is necessary following the death of one woman who advertised her service in the said category, Newmark replied “every decision Craigslist make is reflection of the users’ feedback.”

Newmark also said that feedback often changes every time but did not further elaborate his answers.

Craigslist Killer

The online advertising giant came under controversy after authorities arrested Markoff over allegation that he killed a masseuse who advertised herself in erotic section.

According to reports, Markoff also robbed some of his victims and tied them up before leaving.  Brisman, his only alleged victim who died, was believed to fight back which forced the suspect to shot her with a semi-automatic handgun.
