Hundreds of US television stations cut off its analog signals to shift to digital frequency on Tuesday, causing thousands of viewers to lose their connection, according to an Associated Press (AP) report.
More than 200 stations have cut off its analog frequencies and shifted to digital broadcasts, while some 400 stations are still offering analog signals to offer at least some programs for those people who have not yet bought converter box or digital television.
Some TV stations reported about the influx of questions by people who are not aware of the digital transition, adding that there are still many Americans who are not prepared from this drastic communication change.
Meanwhile, customer care centers said that thousands of people were asking if how they can get a converter box which can allow them to watch digital broadcasts.
Few years ago, the government passed a bill ordering all TV service providers to digitalize its broadcast. With this law, analog frequencies will be totally phased out from the country probably this year or the next, depending on the decision of lawmakers who earlier postponed the “digital TV” bill to allow people to have more time to change their televisions or buy converter boxes.
Earlier report said that majority of cities in the US agreed to the government’s June 12 deadline. Meanwhile, some providers followed the February 17 time limit, saying that it have already provided its customers enough time to be prepared from the transition.
Meanwhile, the newly signed economic stimulus package will be used to provide coupons for people who cannot afford to buy a converter box which usually costs around $45 to $80 in the US.
