US Military Defense Uses Social Networks to Reach Audience

The US Military Defense is using popular social networking platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to reach a broader audience in an effort to hire new military recruits and inform the public about current issues.

In an interview, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Freakley, who is the Army Command Recruiting chief, said that social sites including Facebook can allow the military department to reach potential recruits aged 18 to 24.

Freakley cited that with a network of friends, a recruit can reach other people from his or her friends list and convince them to join the military.

According to previous report, top military officials admitted of having a personal account in social platforms that will allow them to interact with other people.  Some even said they would personally answer questions sent to them regarding military issues.

Apart from social networking, the military is also using another popular Internet property blogging.  Meanwhile, some officials said they are trying to sanitize the content of blogs and forums since some people are posting inappropriate comments and messages, but still, they said they are trying to make it as open and interactive as possible.

Meanwhile, experts said that the current trend of using social sites by groups and government departments is not surprising as online communities have changed the way people communicate and interact and have paved way to a new cultural revolution in terms of digital communication worldwide.

According to online communication experts, the advancement in the Internet technology has created a population who live in a virtual world, that most of them even have a hard time drawing a line between privacy and harmless sharing of information.
