Two US Scientists Invent Revolutionary Battery

Modern society is in constant need of energy that experts have predicted it would collapse if people run out of energy source.  But with the growing demand for electricity and the expanding human population, scientists and inventors are driven to find the most sustainable and effective source of energy.

Just recently, two scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have come up with a solution that will revolutionize the whole concept of battery.

Today, batteries which have Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) are commonly used in laptops and hybrid cars.  While these are very effective in storing electricity, its design cannot discharge power with a sudden force.  With this limitation, electric-powered cars are unable to travel faster than fuel-engine vehicles.

One of the most common problems of a battery system is that it takes a longer time to recharge. But with a prototype that will gain and release the electricity in a sudden burst, experts believe they already have the solution.

The prototype battery has ion (atom which has electrical charge) just like the LiFePO4 battery but with added lithium phosphate coating that will allow more effective transfer of energy.  This special coating works by pushing the ions toward the tunnel and into the terminal.

In an interview, the two scientists said the improved LiFePO4 can be fully recharged in 10 seconds, a far outcry from the conventional batteries which are recharged in few hours or even a whole day.

In a statement, MIT said that the modified LiFePO4 lasts longer than conventional lithium-ion batteries and will not easily degrade when frequently recharged.  And because the prototype battery has been designed with smaller size, compact electronic devices can also utilize this.
