Sprint Nextel Smartphones Will Have Wi-Fi Access

US telecommunication giant Sprint Nextel on Monday asked its Smartphone manufacturers to include Wi-Fi connectivity options and the latest version of BlackBerry Tour, which is set to be released in 2010.

In a statement, Sprint director of business product marketing Jeff Clemow said that the move was part of the company’s continues development to give consumers everything they want into one device.

He said that starting today; all Smartphones that the company will sell will include Wi-Fi capabilities. But Clemow said that the company did not give the manufacturers a specific time line for the inclusion of the technology.

Sprint launched the Tour this weekend. But experts belittled its capabilities, saying that the new device does not support Wi-Fi connectivity. Sprint Nextel, meanwhile, said that it has already addressed the concerns saying that the new line of Tour devices will have internet connection.

Sprint announce the move after other carrier companies, including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile said that they are seriously considering to offer Wi-Fi access to all its Smartphones.

Industry research firm Current Analysis said that telecom companies are now changing its tune about providing Wi-Fi connectivity to all of their clients as their see the wide potential of the technology.

Earlier, Wi-Fi is considered as inferior compared to 3G, a technological innovation that was considered by the carriers as the future of communication.

But by offering Wi-Fi access to all its Smartphones, carriers can further expand their coverage and likewise remove excess load off the 3G network traffic.

Experts also believe that consumers wanted 3G for a wider coverage but they also prefer Wi-Fi for faster connection to the web, adding that it is only right for the carriers to provide both to their customers.

Meanwhile, analysts believe that several carriers are studying that possibility to add WiMax connection to its Smartphones for high-speed mobile connection.
