Researchers were alarmed over the increasing number of Cyber Espionage Attacks being conducted by China-based hackers who earlier infiltrated key government and private computer systems around the world.
According to a study, Canadian researchers told that the attacks has infected some 1, 295 computer in over 120 countries. The study also showed that the attackers, known as Ghostnet, has infiltrated and penetrated even the most sophisticated computers containing vital information of the said buildings. One of the most popular victims was the Dalai Lama.
The Dalia Lama’s office commissioned the said report, saying that vital information from their headquarters might have been obtained by the hackers.
Also affected were the computer networks of neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia. The attackers particularly picked embassies, news media, and non-government organizations of each country, the researchers said.
Other embassies all over the world have also been targeted. The surprising thing is that no one knew that their systems have been infiltrated. The researchers said that more than 30 percent of the infected hosts including Germany, Portugal, Cyprus, Romania, and Latvia were considered as “high-profile” targets.
But researchers based in Toronto, Canada said the attack does not point to the Chinese government despite being done entirely by computers in their country. To date, the report said that there was no further way of knowing who initiated the attack since China now has the most number of online users in the world.
They said that the attack can be attributed to the increasing number of users which also coincide with the increasing number of malwares in China. However, the researchers can not answer why key government and media systems were the ones being attacked.
Meanwhile, Chinese government said the research findings were only a propaganda campaign launched by Tibetans.
