Popular website Wikipedia.org on Tuesday said that it will now require further research and proofreading to all public changes before it could be disseminated to the online public.
In a statement, Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization who is in charge of the user-generated encyclopedia in the internet, said that the changes in the editorial policies were part of the on-going development to ensure accuracy and fairness to all the articles written in the webpages.
There are several instances were pranksters intentionally change the contents of the webpage to discredit or to destroy people they do not like.
There are also several reports were people upload credentials and “facts” that are misleading. To date, Wikipedia.org has over three million user generated articles.
Effective immediately, Wikimedia said that no new articles will be published in the website without the approval of the editors. Other flagged articles will require revisions by volunteer editors, who will make sure that the articles are acceptable and truthful.
Wikimedia Chairman of the Board Lawyer Michael Snow said that the “tightening of the screws” will make sure that the website can compete with other search engine developed encyclopedia.
“We will implement a tight security to all the contents posted by the public. We will implement less tolerance and we will make sure that the editors will implement our newly grinded axe,” he said.
Last year, Wikimedia had already implemented the tight watch to its German-based website following complaints by some organization over the inaccurate contents of the website.
People like John Seigenthaler, a former assistant to U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy, have protested over the misleading and deceitful autobiography about him.
Also, Google Watch protest-site creator Daniel Brandt slapped Wikipedia with major complaints for inaccurate bios of popular people all over the world.
In 2005, Brandt even suggested to file libel cases against the online encyclopedia.
