Nokia Recalls Some 14 Million Faulty Chargers

World’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia Inc. on Monday announced the recall of some 14 million chargers made in 2009 due to reports of faulty manufacturing.

In a statement, Nokia Spokesperson James Etheridge said that approximately 14 million chargers were included in the recall following reports that it could cause electrical shock to the users.

He added that the faulty chargers, which were made by third-party manufacturers, will be replaced by the phone company for free.

Nokia has identified the third-party subcontractor BYD Company.

Meanwhile, Etheridge said that they have not yet received any incident reports or injuries related to the chargers.

Also in the statement, the spokesperson said that markets in China, Brazil, Argentina, Britain, and some other countries, where the chargers were not distributed or sold in a small volume, will not be included in the said recall.

Those chargers included in the recall were models: AC-3E and AC-3U, which manufactured between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009; and the AC-4U model, which were made between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009.

The said faulty AC-3E charger was distributed in some parts of Europe and Asia while the two other models were mainly sold in major phone markets North and Latin America.

Also, the Etheridge has advised all Nokia consumers to who bought their Nokia mobile phones and chargers during the specified date to see if they have the faulty models. He added that they can check the company website to see if the models they have are part of the batch considered as potentially dangerous.

Earlier reports told that some of the users were electrocuted when they attempted to pullout the chargers from the electric sockets. No serious injuries were reported but several health experts said that it could lead to fatal heart attack to some people.
