The world’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia Inc. over the weekend unveils plan to release three new Smartphones with a touchscreen features to allow the company to compete against other android phone makers like Apple and Research in Motion.

The announcement came following criticisms from technology groups, saying that the Finland-based phone company is avoiding major competition by not bringing its line of Smartphones into the market quickly enough.

In response, the world’s number one cellphone manufacturer said that it will soon come up with the Smartphones, an ultra-potable notebook computer, which it will acquire with the help of Microsoft Corp.

The devices will run on the popular Microsoft Office platform, as well as the new notebook PC.

To date, Nokia’s line of phones are still using an outdated OS, which according to many technology analysts, is not enough to hold the assault of Apple’s iPhone.

London-based Nomura Securities top technology analyst Richard Windsor expressed doubt over Nokia’s plan to launch new devices, saying that it would take another year or so before the company could launch a competitive Smartphone.

Compare to the popular iPhone, the Nokia N97 Smartphone only achieve achieved a modest sale. Since its launch in June, the company was only able to sold 500, 000 N97 units worldwide while the third generation iPhone reached more than one million in sales during the first weekend since it was launched.

He added that what Nokia needs now is a Smartphone that is capable of bringing fast Internet connection and wider feature selection for it to be able to compete directly with the iPhone.

In recent months, Nokia’s shares of the mobile phone market were slowly being slashed away by the Android phone segment as it was only able to sell some 45 percent of the 40 million Smartphone in the second quarter of the year.

At the same time last year, the phone manufacturer acquired 47.4 percent of more than 32 million handsets sold in the world market.
