Japanese videogame guru Shigeru Miyamoto revealed plans for Nintendo Co in participating in educational development of school children by turning the company’s popular handheld consoles as teaching aids.
Miyamoto, the man behind the success of Nintendo, said that he is now devoting much of his time and company resources by turning the popular Nintendo DS gaming console into educational aids and teaching tools in schools across the world.
“Education is the area where I am devoting much of myself,” Miyamoto said.
The Japanese gaming guru cited that Nintendo’s handheld gaming console are now being used as guides in most of Japan’s museums, aquariums, and galleries.
And now, Miyamoto is planning to expand the use of the handheld device to elementary and junior schools in Japan starting the new school year.
Apart from the educational value of the Nintendo DS, Miyamoto also said that the move will allow the expansion of the gaming industry with a new range of audience being introduced to it.
The 57-year-old Miyamoto was the brains behind popular videogames like “Super Mario Bros.” series, “Legend of Zelda” and the “Donkey Kong” series. He also part of the team that designed the widely popular motion-sensitive console Nintendo Wii, which has been the top-selling console for the past three years.
He hopes that other gaming console manufacturers will follow suit and will not limit the capability of the devices in to just gaming consoles. He said that the introduction of Sony’s Playstation Move is an example that competitors are now moving forward into another level.
The Japanese gaming legend is currently in London to accept the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Fellowship at the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards as recognition for his creative works.
The academy title was the highest honor bestowed to people who has contributed in the advancement of technology and other related fields.
