In a bid to be a major player in “Green Technologies,” Scientists from Taiwan on Friday have revealed its latest discovery, a mobile phone charger that is powered by hydrogen.
In a statement released on Friday, researchers at the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Hsinchu city said that the new hydrogen-powered charger can help in bringing more discoveries to help reinforce its efforts to make greener and environment-friendly technologies.
According to the scientists, the new hydrogen-powered device can recharge one mobile phone in just less than two hours without being plugged into electrical outlets.
“The device can help a lot in protecting the environment since it is made out of hydrogen, which is a recyclable source of energy. It is also energy-efficient,” said Tsau Fanghei, the leader scientist in Taiwan’s foremost research institute.
“Out of this discovery, we hope to make more technologies using the invention as the platform for innovation. We would also make further improvements in the discovery and hope that it will soon replace the current lithium ion batteries’ recharging system used in mobile phones today,” he said.
National Taiwan University environmental scientist Ma Hwong-wen said that the invention will make new ground for Taiwan’s and the world’s quest for a greener and environmentally-friendly technology.
“It is new. It is breaking new grounds since the hydrogen used in such chargers will produce no hazard to the environment,” he added.
Meanwhile, economics ministry’s Bureau of Energy director Yeh Hui-ching said that the technology will also carve out a new space for the future development of energy generation, not only in Taiwan, but also all over the world.
“The Taiwanese government, along with other major developed countries in the world, hopes to have a slot in the development of global ‘green’ industry’s production chain through the use of hydrogen fuel cell,” he added.
To date, Taiwan imports around 98 percent of its energy source, making the discovery one of the most important invention of its time.
