Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. on Thursday shown to the public its new futuristic concept car, called the “Land Glider”. The zero-emission electric vehicle was said to tilt left and right when cornering giving its drivers, or pilots, the distinct feeling of gliding in the air.
The new Land Glider was also designed like most airplanes, with aerodynamic and thin frame (3.6 feet wide), that can slice through wind during high-speed runs.
It is also a two-seater model. But unlike a regular sports car, the driver and his co-pilot are seated likefighter pilots—the pilot goes in the front while the co-pilot seated in the back, which added to that “aircraft” feeling.
In his speech, Nissan project head Ryusuke Hayashi said that they specifically designed the Land Glider to move more than two dimensional ways.
Most of the sports car today can only move left and right, but the new zero-mission all-electric vehicle can tilt up to 17 degrees giving it a more efficient run in bends.
“It can also park easily in tight spaces,” Hayashi said.
“During the test drives, you can really see that it is not a car. When you’re driving in the open road, the car feels like an aircraft and you’ll feel as if you’re flying,” he added.
Engineers of the new Land Glider got their inspiration from motorbikes and the actual glider craft, which utilizes the updraft of the wind to last for a long period of time without fuel.
Also, engineers gave the new concept car a set of four-tilting wheels, which requires less power consumption during bunking left and right in a 17-degree angle.
It was also fitted with moving fenders, which are sensory controlled, that would calculate the flow of wind during fast corners and stabilizes the vehicle. It also has an airplane-inspired control panel, including the joysticks.
