Microsoft Says Hackers Using Microsoft 7 to Infect Computers

by Sanky on May 10, 2009

Technology giant Microsoft on Thursday warned users over the proliferation of online criminals and hackers who use fake version of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) Operating System to target their victims and to embed malicious software.

In Microsoft’s website, Joe Williams, Genuine Windows general manager, said that consumers should not download illegal copies of the platform to avoid being victimized by online fraudsters and hackers.

Citing reports that many computers have been infected with malware for the past couple of days, Williams urged users to get their copies of Windows 7 RC in legal sources.

On Tuesday, the technology giant released its unfinished version of Windows 7 RC to allow users to give their feedbacks on its features so the company can further improve the operating system.

In an effort to protect users from various online threats and prevent infected illegal copies from spreading, Microsoft has embedded anti-piracy protection on its new operating system.  Meanwhile, some experts said that this may not be enough as online fraudsters have been known to use more advanced hacking tools which are sometimes even more sophisticated than other platforms.

According to Williams, a recent study shows that one-thirds of Microsoft platform users have downloaded unauthorized copies on the Internet.   Despite this figure, the official said that many users preferred to buy genuine copies, but with the proliferation of fake version, most of them end up buying the pirated ones.

Windows 7 RC is the successor of Vista which has been criticized by many computer users and experts over its not-so-friendly features and complex tools.

According to previous reports, nine out of 10 computers in the world are using Windows operating system.
