More than 9 million computers were infected with an online worm called “Conficker” that is continuously spreading from all over the world.

US security software company F-Secure warned the public against this malicious software that is spreading at an alarming rate, infecting nearly 1 million computers everyday.

Meanwhile, security experts have yet to determine the whole purpose of this online threat, whether it is a cyber criminals’ test-run to know the weakness of software and platforms or an impotent virus which can ignite massive problem in the future.

According to Trend Micro security software specialist David Perry, “Conficker” worm, also referred as “Downadup”, is possibly the biggest online threat in the history of the Internet.

Perry also said that cyber criminals seem to be testing a new technology, adding that “Conficker” is working well as it has successfully infected millions of computers worldwide.

The worm spreads at an alarming rate since it has been designed as a self-replicating program.  This online threat can also infect a computer if a person injected a USB which has been infected by “Conficker”.  Meanwhile, the worm can also be transferred through Internet.

This malware can potentially steal sensitive data and personal details stored in the computer, or worse, hackers can take control of the network.

According to a computer expert, computers are more susceptible with this online worm if it is lacking with updated security patches.

Asked for their response, Microsoft officials said that they have already modified their security software and tools to stop “Conficker” from spreading and to cure the infected networks or computers.

Microsoft has also urged computer users to constantly update their anti-virus tools and use hard-to-break passwords to protect their sensitive files.
