I was a fan of ICQ from a long time ago. I remember having made friends using their earlier versions the messaging software named after the phrase “I seek you”. I loved the way I can search for persons across the globe and message them instantly. It was really a precursor of the many social networking platforms that we now have, plus more.
For some reason, ICQ faded from the limelight. Now, it is back with vengeance. It is introducing ICQ 6 which promises a brand new world of messaging and communication. ICQ.com claims that it is not just an upgrade of previous versions but a reinvention of the whole communication package.
The innovations install the user as king and allows him to communicate in various ways all in one single window and within a new and fresh design and friendly interface allowing seamless interaction and backed up by a new them composed by Infected Mushroom.
ICQ 6 allows you to do phone chat, video, text and messaging all in one platform. This appears to be where most IM software is going and ICQ refuses to be left behind and die down. In fact it seeks to be on the lead, hoping to become an optimal communication tool. Among the new, innovative and improved features are quick instant messaging, easy message access, tabbed conversations, history, search, file sharing, a 1000 friends contact list, and a new soundtrack. And more updates are apparently in store this year.
What’s more? ICQ also offers a fun way to send your messages the Zlango way. In case you do not know, Zlango is a universal language of expressive visual icons that may be used in place of words. To use Zlango, you just need to select “auto convert on” and type your message and it will be translated automatically into very expressive icons. Try OMG, TMI, WTF, TTFN, ROFL and TTYL and you will see.
Of course, to support the new ICQ 6 messaging system, ICQ.com also provides a lot of social networking features like groups, chat rooms, online games, blogs and greeting cards.
This is quite an interesting mix and comes close if not exceeds those on social networking platforms. It shows that the trend now is really bringing people closer each other no matter where they are located on the globe.
I don’t have the statistics but I know more and more people in the world are online. In addition, Internet access is obviously getting better and better. Even in developing countries, broadband internet is making great inroads. People of various races and languages, different continents and walks of life, are now within a few mouse-click way.
At the same, we are also aware of the great divides which are causing great conflicts in the world today. No doubt that there is need for better communication and greater understanding among peoples. Otherwise, civilization will become a victim to disastrous human folly like war.
No doubt, innovative communication tools like ICQ will help us survive as a people – better people.
