Computer giant Lenovo issued a directive ordering the immediate recall of its ThinkPad Laptop batteries following reports of permanent damage due certain errors to its production.
In its support website, Lenovo warned its consumers from continuing use of the batteries, saying that it is permanently damage since it will not recharge. Continuous use will also result to further damage to the battery packs and can also affect the laptops.
The article also said that the company will offer users a replacement to the battery packs if they return it to designated distributors. It is available for worldwide customers.
To see if the batteries were damaged, Lenovo has installed diagnostic software that would run to see if the power supply was damage. The tool can be downloaded in the company’s support site.
Several symptoms include not recharging, sudden drop in the power gauge, and failure to recharge in fluctuating manner.
However, those who will avail for replacement would be subjected to questions including laptop models and specific batteries installed in their laptops.
Meanwhile, asked why battery packs in the said laptops were malfunctioning, Lenovo refused to comment. But the company stressed that there is no safety concerns and the recalled batteries do not pose safety hazards to people using it.
“The batteries were immediately recalled by the company to ensure the product development and the recall was not issued by the US government,” the statement said.
It will be recalled that in June 2007, the U.S. Consumer Safety Protection Commission ordered the recall of some 100, 000 Lenovo ThinkPad batteries. The recall was due to reports of overheating and can cause fire. The said batteries were made by Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd.
Lenovo has listed the model of ThinkPad laptops affected by the recall. The models included were the ThinkPad R60, R61, T60, X60, X61, and T61with installed batteries under the serial numbers 42T4546, 42T4566, 92P1141, 42T4550, 42T4567, 42T4568, 92P1169, 92P1173, 93P5028, and 93P5030.
