World’s No. 4 computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd has now entered the Smartphone marker with its flagship touch-screen mobile device that runs on Google Inc.’s Android technology, called the “Lephone”.

The new Lephone was unveiled on Wednesday by the PC maker in a bid to catch up with its rival Dell Inc and Acer Inc, which has also entered the Smartphone market.

The company also said that the new Smartphone will be launch within this year in China, where Lenovo reign the PC marker.

Lenovo chief executive Yang Yuanqing said that the new LePhone has a 3.7-inch touch-screen interface, which is encased in a 12-mm thick frame. He added that the Google Android operating system was maximized with the device’s Qualcomm Inc. Snapdragon chip.

However, Yang did not provide any details on how much the base price for the new Lephone is.

He also said that the move to enter the Smartphone market goes with its business model, saying that mobile devices, citing the recent success of Apple and Dell, are a “natural extension” for computer manufacturers.

“We are now looking forward for the next big opportunity for PC makers, which is the mobile Internet,” Yang said in a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Shows in Las Vegas.

Earlier, Lenovo’s rivals Dell and Acer has launched their respective Smartphone lines in China in a bid to take major market shares away for the dominant iPhone, which is Apple Inc’s flagship phone.

It will be recalled that Lenovo announced that it is ready to pay more than $200 million to reacquire its cellphone business, which it has bid off more than one and half year ago.

Meanwhile, Lenovo President and Chief Operating Officer Rory Read said that the launch of its Smartphone devices in China would allow the computer maker to build momentum for the worldwide release.
