Beijing, China: A journalist group said Friday it has shut down its website after a series of cyber attacks which included hacking several Yahoo email accounts of foreign journalists in the country.
In a letter sent through email, The Foreign Correspondents Club of China said that it had temporarily shut down its website after being attacked by hackers for two days.
“We are not aware of the motivations behind the attack or those who are responsible for this hacking”, the letter said.
However, the journalist group said it has traced the IP address of the hackers in US and China, but added that the computers might be in other locations and that the hackers might just be misleading them.
Meanwhile, some foreign correspondents in China said that they were unable to open their Yahoo accounts. Also, some human rights activists in the country have alleged that their emails were attacked and infiltrated by hackers.
Recently, technology giant Google has pulled out its Chinese-language search services in the country after discovering that it has been a victim of a “sophisticated and well-orchestrated cyber attacks which originated from China.”
The search engine giant has also accused the Chinese government of hacking Gmail accounts of human rights activist in the country.
While some analysts and computer experts believe that the Chinese government is behind the series of cyber attacks against several journalists and political activists, some Chinese officials denied the allegation saying that they condemn any form of Internet hacking.
However, the Chinese government reiterated that foreign companies such as Google should follow the country’s law.
China has banned countless of online contents deemed by the government as politically subversive.
