Investigate Google Cloud Services: Privacy Group

United States: A privacy group urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate Google’s products including photo and email services over its alleged failure to safeguard its users’ sensitive information, according to AFP report.

In a complaint filed by Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) to FTC on Tuesday, the Internet giant provides inadequate safety and security features which can protect the data and information of users.

The complaint was filed following the incident of bug which resulted to some leaked information on users’ data.

When asked for comments, Jennifer Mazzon, Google Docs product manager, admitted there is “a small percentage of digital documents which had been compromised since some users accidentally shared documents because of an online bug.

The privacy group also asked the FTC to investigate if the Internet giant is also doing deceptive trade practices and other unfair activities to its cloud computing programs including its Google Calendar, software for digital photos, online spreadsheet and word processing services, Gmail, and Google Docs.

To determine if Google is protecting its users’ data, the privacy group petitioned to investigate the company’s operation and its use of software and programs that will protect people’s account and data against hackers, fraudster, and other online threats.

“We want to know if Google provides security and privacy tools which can protect its users”, and EPIC official said.

EPIC said that FTC should safeguard the welfare of online users to make sure that Internet companies are not using people’s information.

“The vast information submitted to Google should be secured and protected”, the privacy group added.

Google’s cloud computing services are becoming popular not just among individuals but also to business companies because most of these are for free or requires more affordable service fee compared to Microsoft, Yahoo, and AT&T.
