Internet giant Google on Wednesday released a new software for tracking users of cell phones and other mobile devices.
According to Google, people from 27 countries from all parts of the world will be able to use the software, allowing users to share their location to their families and friends.
The Google Latitude will allow people to inform others about their exact locations. The Internet giant said in its website that users can select who will receive the information and can go offline if they would like to.
Meanwhile, to protect the privacy of users, Google said on its official blog site it has added privacy controls and features to the new software.
According to some experts, the software can also be used by small businesses. For example, when a customer orders a pizza from a store, the delivery man can simply track down the location of the person by simply using a mobile phone.
Meanwhile, Google has not yet disclosed the cost of this new geo-tagging service, but experts predicted that it will come in a cheaper price compared to other commercialized service (Google has been known to provide open-source software which are popular among businesses with its impressive performance despite its relatively cheap price.)
Despite the apparent advantages of Google Latitude, some people are quite apprehensive with this new application since the information can be exploited by some businesses. Some people also raise some concerns including privacy issues.
The Google Latitude works on laptop computers, smartphones which use Google’s Android Software, some Balckberry devices (example: Research In Motion Ltd’s), some mobile phones that features Microsoft Corp’s Windows Mobile and on Symbian S60 platform, and GPS-enabled devices.
