Google adds automatic translation to Gmail

With a single click of the mouse, non-English speaking users can now enjoy reading their email in Gmail.com after internet giant Google on Tuesday added a new technology to its email service that will allow users to translate messages into 12 other languages.

The automatic translation program of Google has been in operation since last year. However, the translation scheme for Gmail users was made available recently due to popular demand.

According to Google executives, there are several dozen languages available for users once they click the automatic translation option in the gmail webpage. Once registered, Gmail users can now read their messages to any language they preferred even if the messages sent to them were written in other languages.

The automatic translation also works best in conference discussions where participants can send messages in a language they are comfortable working with and the person on the other end will receive it in the format he likes and vice-versa, Google said in a blog statement.

Another good feature of the newest Gmail Labs option is helping users to identify Spams, which does not translate automatically to the desired language of users.

Developed in 2006, Google’s machine translation system is a state-of-the-art program that uses language rules and bases its translation on the writing approach of the users. Google has acquired the services of vocabulary and grammar experts to correctly translate words, phrases, and sentences to a language that users can understand.

Major languages such as Danish, English, German, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Italian, Dutch, and Spanish may be translated to other formats.
