Firefox Web browser has set a new record by surpassing the one billion download mark, Mozilla Foundation said on Friday.
The fastest growing open-source web browser, including the latest 3.5 version, has recorded more than 1.0033 billion downloads, Otto de Voogd said.
But spreadfirefox.com said that the numbers pegged at around 1.0044 billion, one of the fastest in downloading history.
Based on the records counter, Firefox has reached an average of 1.6 million downloads per day, which was conducted in the past 15 days. The counter also said that some 24 downloads were recorder for every second.
The figures do not include the number of automatic updates. But the number of manual updates and multiple downloads of the browsers by one person were counted.
With the said achievement, Mozilla said that it will have an online celebration at the onebillionplusyou.com. The company will celebrate the milestone and is expected to go online on Monday.
However, Mozilla’s Firefox ranked only second to Google’s Chrome as the fastest web browser in the market today based on a test conducted by PC World.
To date, Mozilla has some 31 percent market share while Microsoft remains dominant with its Internet Explorer gathering some 60 percent of the market shares.
The remaining browsers such as Opera, Chrome, and Apple Safari only occupy some five percent of the market.
To avoid being taken over by Firefox, Microsoft had earlier announced plan to install Internet Explorer-only browser to its newly released Windows 7.
But the European Commission, as consideration to consumers, has blocked the software company’s move, saying that the consumers need an alternative aside from the dominant browser. But talks regarding the Explorer-only platform are still on going and the Commission has yet to make a concession.
With this, Microsoft also continues to ship special version of Windows 7 to the continent. The version has no browser included making it generally difficult for consumers to look for one.
