Federal authorities announced they needed computer experts who have a comprehensive understanding on how malicious software works and know the tools and strategies which are being used by online hackers who are the biggest threats against the Internet system.
In March, the General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) and Homeland Security Department (HSD) posted an announcement which stated that authorities are seeking Internet experts who can identify weak spots in the federal system.
As hackers who are believed from China have infiltrated government departments from different countries, online security experts said that the US should boost its defense against such threat to make sure the state’s military secrets and other crucial information are protected.
Meanwhile, Defense secretary Robert Gates heeded the warning and said that the Pentagon has even increased the number of cyber experts it trains.
“We will train 80 to 250 online experts by 2011 to make sure that the government system is protected from malicious threats”, Gates said.
In line with the government’s plan to secure its network, President Barack Obama has recently appointed Melissa Hathaway as a head of a new agency that will protect the federal system and the Internet traffic in the country.
Recently, the government has conducted a study that will improve the security tools used by the federal departments and even those which are used by airline flight administration, stock markets, and financial institutions.
In March, Government Accountability Office director of technology David Powner admitted that the US lacks recovery plans in the event of cyber disaster and other online threats.
In an interview, Powner said they are not prepared for such events and added that new security measures should be immediately adopted to safeguard the nation’s top secrets and other important digital data of the government.
