Famous iPhone Hacker Breaks into PS3

by Sanky on January 13, 2010

George Hotz, a 20-year-old hacker famous for cracking codes of Apple Inc’s iPhone, said that he was also able to crack into Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming console.

In his blog post, Hotz claimed that he has done it again, and this time, with the PS3. He said that it took him around five weeks before he could finally manage to run his own software on the gaming console. Typically, PS3 only allows digital signed software by Sony.

“I have read and write access to the entire system memory of PS3, and [hypervisor] level access to the processor,” he said in his blog post. “In other words, I have hacked PS3.”

Hotz also said that the combination of the simple hardware, which he cleverly applied, and some complicated software have helped him pull off the feat.

It will be recalled that Hotz gained fame three years ago when the US media reported about his technique on how to operate iPhone on any wireless networks.

The popular Smartphone was being distributed exclusively by AT&T wireless.

With the new “breakthrough” in the PlayStation 3, users can now run any unauthorized software in their consoles including Linux OS and PS2 games. It has also given users a chance to run pirated software like games, music, and DVDs in their system.

Meanwhile, Hotz said that fans will have to wait for some time before they can actually see the new code.

The hacker said that he is worried that Sony might find ways to disable the new software once he opened it to the public.

Apple did the same thing when the so-called “jailbreak” hack was opened for the iPhone. The company has repeatedly warded off any jailbreak codes or updates for the device.

But hackers have fought the war by releasing new techniques each time their attempts has been disabled.

For the mean time, Hotz said that fans will have to wait for the new decryption keys, which could help many iPhone users to connect to other wireless networks.
