Online virus Conficker has started to attack computers worldwide following speculations that this computer threat remained dormant, according to security experts.
Security software maker Symantec Corp. said malware Conficker has started to spread in small numbers of units in recent weeks despite claims that this has already been resolved.
In an interview, Symantec Security Response vice president Vincent Weafer warned people that the malware will not be as aggressive compared to other online threats, making this even harder to detect.
According to earlier reports, the malicious software has already infected millions of units but remain in dormant state. Meanwhile, experts fear that hackers can control infected PCs through botnet which is a network of computers which runs automatically.
How Conficker Runs
After infecting millions of units last year, experts said Conficker has started to download another malware called Waledac that works by sending spam messages which are in dormant mode, allowing this to spread without the knowledge of the users.
According to security experts, Waledac is being controlled by online criminals to steal sensitive information including banking accounts.
Security firm Trend Micro Inc. said Waledac is a sophisticated malware controlled by extremely professional hackers, adding that this has probably spread more spam engine which is feared to already infect thousands of units few weeks ago.
Meanwhile, such malwares target computers that use Microsoft Windows with its vulnerable security patch.
Fighting Conficker
Because of the growing threat of the malware, international companies have created an alliance aim to stop Conficker from infecting computers worldwide.
Meanwhile, security experts warn that the alliance should immediately address the looming online threat to prevent havoc in the Internet industry.
