Expert Says US Cyber Security Broken

Top Internet communication experts said the US cyber security is weak and “broken” following reports that online hackers from other countries including China and Russia have been stealing money from financial institutions and breaking into government network to access sensitive data and information.

Alan Paller, director of security firm SANS Institute, described the cyber defense and security tools used by government as “embarrassing” with its weakness and vulnerability.

He urged the administration to boost its cyber security and invest a huge portion of the multi-billion national budget to the development and strengthening of secure technology on the Internet.

“If the government is sincere in boosting its defense, cyber security leadership should be prioritized in the agenda.  This is the best and most effective weapon”, Paller said.

Security Czar

President Barack Obama is set to announce the government’s new cyber security czar in an effort to protect the nation’s sensitive data and financial system’s information and transaction from hackers who are using more advanced technologies to break into systems.

Few weeks ago, the government has admitted that its network has been attacked and infiltrated by hackers.  After admitting the network’s vulnerability, lawmakers proposed several bills that aim to provide security on the Internet communication system.

Recently, Sen. Tom Carper has introduced a new bill that will allow the President to cut off Internet connection of private companies and Federal institutions as part of its security plans in case its network is attacked.

According to a study, the government network is attacked by more than 32,000 hackers.

Last year, the federal government charged two hackers from Europe on allegation that they distributed a malware that crippled the networks of some government institutions and private companies for two weeks, resulting to at least 1 million damages, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
