Californian Official wants “blurred” online maps

Citing risks from terrorism and hate crimes, an elected Republican official in the state of California urged fellow lawmakers to immediately pass a bill that would censor “vulnerable” spots such as churches and other house of worships, government buildings, hospitals, and schools in online maps.

Southern California Lawmaker Joel Anderson said that Internet providers of maps and global positioning systems should blur or censor these sensitive areas in their database to avoid further security risk.

To date, most of the internet mapping services can provide potential threats with a 360 degree view of any possible targets.

The assemblyman, citing the case former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, House of Commons, and other British government buildings, said that other mapping services providers in the Internet should follow the lead of Google maps, which recently deleted the street view options of all the locations that can be a host to such attacks.

However, the Internet Company announced that such deletion will only be based on requests of officials or private property owners.

Under the AB 225, violators will face $250, 000 fines per day if they failed to follow the proposed Law. But Anderson admitted that the bill still has a long way to go, adding that revisions and refinement are still needed.

“The initial draft of the bill still needs to be refined. People need to understand the growing international clamor in curbing the potential risks from terrorists and other hate crime perpetrators not only in the United States but in other parts of the world,” Anderson said.

Aside from the $250, 000 penalties, the lawmaker that they are still studying additional fines such as jail term for violators. He said that he is hoping that fellow assemblymen will approve the proposed bill to heighten the online security and lower risks in the process.
