Apple Inc., the world’s leading electronic company, won in a trademark infringement case against a Chinese company which has used the logo resembling the US corporation’s icon, according to a state media.
A court decision has ruled that New Apple Concept Digital Technology Co. Ltd, a company based in Shenzhen, should pay 400,000 yuan, (US$58, 000) in total damages to Apple Inc.
According to Xinhua news agency, the court sided with the US company since the logo used by the Chinese corporation greatly resembles the distinctive symbol of the electronic giant.
The report also revealed that Apple’s trademark symbol was used by the Chinese company on its website and electronic products.
Chinese government is pressured by foreign companies over its lack of legal actions to curb copyright infringements and piracy activities which are widespread in the country.
According to a recent study, copyright infringement costs foreign companies billions of dollars in profit annually.
History of the Apple Logo
The company’s first trademark symbol was designed by Jobs and Wayne which depicted Isaac Newton and the apple tree. But with the complexity of the logo, in 1976, this was immediately replaced by a symbol resembling a rainbow-colored apple with a bite on its side.
While it is generally accepted that the logo is a tribute to Newton’s major contributions to science, some people said that this was also in honor to Alan Turing, one of the world’s greatest mathematicians who committed suicide by eating an apple with a poison believed to be cyanide.
In 1998, the electronic giant changed the rainbow-colored apple. While the shape has been retained, the color has been changed into monochromatic shade which is still used to this day.
