PepsiCo on Thursday issued a letter of apology for its new iPhone Application, which was tagged for stereotyping women and making men more of a “chauvinist pig”.
However, PepsiCo Spokesperson Nicole Bradley said that the company will not pull out the application from Apple’s online App Store.
“The App is only available for users 17 years and older. It was designed for people who are in range of our target market for our Amp energy drink. Besides, it is for the entertainment of people who have chosen to opt in to the Amp experience,” Bradley said, adding that they will continue to monitor further feedback from “users” and other parties before they can decide on their next move.
Called the “”Amp up before you score,” the application was designed to entertain and help men to “score” to some two dozen stereotypes of females.
The application includes pickup lines for each type of woman and a scoreboard to help men track their conquests.
As of Wednesday, the free application was still available in Apple’s online store, a week after it was first launched.
Meanwhile, Empower Media marketing director Kevin Dugan has also expressed opinion about the issue, saying that they have expected PepsiCo will not immediately remove the application at the online store since it is a marketing strategy.
“The chatter will continue for a longer period of time. PepsiCo’s marketing strategy is to get noticed. And it is working,” he added.
Based on reviews, the application help men to say what kind of pickup lines are most compatible with each type of stereotyped woman. Women are grouped as foreign exchange students, nerds, rebound girls, and cougars.
The application can also offer hints to men on what they should say when they have engaged in conversation with a particular stereotype of woman.
For example, a foreign exchange student would definitely go for pickup lines like “Wasn’t I in Space Acadamy with you?” or other links that would direct your conversation to world business news.
The male users can then jot down the name, date of conquest, and comments about each type of woman that they have gathered. The worst thing about this is that they can also brag about it by posting the results to their Twitter or Facebook.
